This is the centerpiece of the entire site. The older son represents the Pharisees — and the father’s response to his rage reveals the heart of the parable.
teknon (τέκνον)
Special, precious son — a term of deep endearment
The father uses this word for the angry son. Not the returning son. The one seething at the door, refusing to enter.
The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.
